Nurseries Project and Reforestation

Restoring Madagascar's forests through community nurseries, large-scale planting, and green employment.

📋 Description

The Nurseries Project and Reforestation initiative addresses the alarming rate of deforestation in Madagascar, one of the world's most biodiverse but ecologically threatened countries. By establishing community-managed nurseries and carrying out strategic reforestation across degraded lands, the project simultaneously restores ecosystems, supports local livelihoods, enhances food security, and contributes to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

⛰️ Objectives

  • Establish and manage community plant nurseries across key target regions
  • Plant native and fruit tree species to restore degraded land and forest ecosystems
  • Create green employment opportunities, especially for youth and women
  • Restore soil quality, water retention capacity, and local biodiversity
  • Educate communities on the ecological and economic value of forests

🎖️ Achievements

  • Established multiple community nurseries producing thousands of native tree seedlings
  • Planted thousands of trees across degraded lands in target regions
  • Created temporary and permanent green employment for community members
  • Strengthened community ownership of local natural resource management
  • Documented ecological restoration progress and community livelihood improvements

🌟 Expected Results

  • Thousands of hectares of degraded land restored with native vegetation
  • Sustained community nurseries operating as long-term green enterprises
  • Significant contribution to Madagascar's national reforestation commitments
  • Improved livelihoods and food security for participating communities
  • Enhanced biodiversity and ecosystem services in restored areas
